Welcome to Edition 51, and 2022! Hope you all had a wonderful break and are feeling healthy, happy, and ready for a new year. Before diving into the jobs, I wanted to share a quick note —
One of the highlights of the past year has been my 1:1 coaching calls with many of you (3 a week since June, or about 80 in total).
Today, I wanted to share the piece of advice I end up sharing on most of these calls:
In startups, there are no rules.
In my experience, the startup world rewards grit and scrappiness much more than other fields, like finance or consulting.
Also, the skills startups require are so varied, that there’s a good chance you can make a compelling case for why your experience will benefit the company, even if it comes from a different industry.
If you find a startup that seems really compelling, you can reach out to the founder on Twitter or LinkedIn or email, and you might get a response (especially if your outreach is thoughtful and tailored). You might even get a job offer out of it, whether or not the company had a job posted.
If you want to switch the path you’re on, and you see that the jobs you want require skills like SQL or SEO, then you can find one of the hundreds of quality, often free online classes, learn that skill, and eventually get that job.
I’m not saying any of this is easy, or that it doesn’t take lots of time or effort. But it is possible. So if you’ve been thinking about changing it up, or going for something new, go for it! It just might work out.
As always, feel free to follow Ali Rohde Jobs on LinkedIn or Twitter, or book a time to chat with me here. - Ali
PS - One of my goals this year is to write more (about startups, founders, and VC). I’m looking for someone to work with me to help me edit my pieces. Unfortunately, I can’t pay this person, but I would include you on the byline of any piece I published. If you are interested and a succinct writer, then just respond to this email (alirohdejobs@substack.com) to let me know.
